Desired Results Training Plan for Preschool Special Education
Beginning in the spring of 2007, all preschool special education programs in California will be responsible for implementing the Desired Results access System. All three, four, and five year old preschoolers who have IEPs, regardless of instructional setting or services received, must be assessed using the revised Preschool Desired Results Developmental Profile (PS DRDP-R) or the Desired Results Developmental Profile access (DRDP access). The following table describes the training activities that will support staff and programs in their new responsibilities. Following the table are responses to commonly asked questions related to the training plan. Please note that this training plan will be updated periodically. Please check for the most up-to-date version of this and other documents.
Web Support |
The new DRDP access web site is the most complete and up-to-date source of information on the Desired Results access system. Resources to be posted include fact sheets, assessor‘s guides, administrator’s guides, a training calendar, guidance for assessing children who are English learners, guidance for IEP teams, and materials to support family involvement. Administrators must check the website frequently for updates. |
|---|---|
| Distance Learning | The Desired Results access Project will explore the use of audio, video, and/or web training for assessors and administrators. Training events may include such topics as IEP team responsibilities, assessing English Learners, and data collection requirements. |
| Regional Training | Between January – March ’07, regional one-day training sessions on how to use the DRDP-R and the DRDP access will be provided to preschool special education teachers and DIS staff who provide services to preschoolers. The training will be delivered by a cadre of regional trainers recruited by CDE who will train assessors throughout California. Regional locations will be scheduled to minimize travel time and costs. By attending a training session early in 2007, assessors will have time to become familiar with the instrument before being required to report data. SELPAs have a range of responsibilities related to training, including, but not limited to, sponsoring training events, providing organizational support, and assuring that staff are trained to administer the DRDP-R and DRDP access. |
| Supplemental Documents | Supplemental resources on the Desired Results access web site will assist programs in participating in the Desired Results System. |
Frequently Asked Questions Related to Training
Who will need to be trained?
All California preschool special education Teachers and DIS staff who provide services to preschoolers.
How will SELPAs be notified regarding training dates in their regions?
CDE regional trainers will coordinate with the local contact in each region regarding training dates in that area. Individual SELPA Directors within that region will then be notified with the name of the Regional Contact, training dates and locations. It is the responsibility of individual SELPA Directors to inform special education administrators and trainees/assessors in their SELPAs regarding training information.
We’ve heard from staff that it will be difficult to assess children who receive only one service, such as speech therapy, all areas of development. How will this be addressed?
What are the plans for training Early Start programs?
At this time, the DRDP will not be used to assess the progress of children in Early Start (Part C). Contact the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) for information regarding Early Start: http://www.dds.cahwnet.gov/EarlyStart/ESHome.cfm
