Directory of California Parent Organizations
Serving Families of Young Children with Disabilities
This directory is provided to assist families of young children who have, or are at risk of, disabilities or special healthcare needs in finding organizations that offer services and support.
This directory was compiled in March 2008 by the Desired Results access Project. To update any information included here, please contact the Project at info@draccess.org or (707) 227-5963.
The Desired Results access Project is a special project of the Napa County Office of Education, funded by the California Department of Education, Special Education Division. Please visit www.draccess.org to learn more about the Desired Results Assessment System and to explore additional resources for families.
Definitions
CPRC – Community Parent Resource Center
Community Parent Resource Centers provide underserved parents of children with disabilities—including low-income parents, parents of limited English proficient children, and parents with disabilities—in targeted communities, with the training and information they need to enable them to participate more effectively in helping their children. www.taalliance.org
PTI – Parent Training and Information
Parent Training and Information Centers are parent-directed, non-profit organizations funded by the U.S. Department of Education—authorized under the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)—as well as private sources. PTIs serve families of children and young adults from birth to age 22 with all disabilities: physical, cognitive, emotional, and learning. They help families obtain appropriate education and services for their children with disabilities, work to improve education results, train and inform parents and professionals, resolve problems between families and schools or other agencies, and connect children with disabilities to community resources that address their needs. www.dredf.org/programs/pti.shtml
FRC – Family Resource Center
Family Resource Centers are funded through the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) – Infants and Toddlers Part C, which mandates states to implement a comprehensive early intervention service system for all infants and toddlers with disabilities or at risk, and their families. The FRCs are part of the Early Start Program and are staffed by families of children with special needs. FRCs offer parent-to-parent support and help parents, families, and children locate and use needed services. www.frcnca.org
FEC – Family Empowerment Center
Family Empowerment Centers provide education and empowerment for families of 3 to 22 year-olds with disabilities, to help families navigate the educational system and ensure that each child is receiving an appropriate education. The California Association of Family Empowerment Centers provides information, resources, and technical assistance for a statewide network of local Family Empowerment Centers. www.cafec.org
FVCA – Family Voices of California
A statewide network of agencies, Family Voices of California is a clearinghouse for information and education about ways to assure and improve health care for children with disabilities and chronic conditions. FVCA was established through the linkage of Family Voices National (a national network of families and friends speaking on behalf of children with special health care needs) and the FRC Network of California. www.familyvoicesofca.org
