Return to Reliability and Validity of the DRDP access

Figure 2 Description. The item characteristic curve for an item with a difficulty of 0.

This relationship between item difficulty, person ability, and probability of passing an item can be represented with a line graph that has the person’s ability on the x-axis and the probability of passing the item on the y axis. As a person’s ability increases along the x-axis, the probability of passing the item also increases. The rate at which the probability of passing an item increases with increses of ability changes across the range of ability. At ability levels far from the difficulty of the item (higher or lower) the rate of growth is relatively flat. At abilities level close to the difficulty of the item the rate of growth is steeper. The difficulty of the item represented in in Figure 2 is 0. The figure shows that the rate of growth is steepest close to an ability score of 0.
